Honeycomb

Portland, OR

Located under I-405 between NW Lovejoy St. and NW Kearney St, the site connects the Pearl District with the Alphabet neighborhood. With the streetcar transit along the north side of the site on Lovejoy and the east and west edges are active bike routes, the site provides potential for public gathering.

HONEYCOMB project starts with a basic module of cuboctahedron with an edge 15 ft long. Each specific unit is a transformation based of the basic module, specifically to accomodate different programs, including transit waiting area, markets and fairs, green terraces, bike pathway and most importantly, homeless center with amenities such as learning centers for homeless teens as well as short-term housing units.

The module would be built on a metal framework, the facades could be made from metal mesh panels, solid metal or left open to accomodate different programs' spatial require-ments. Like the name "honeycomb" suggests, the community is an organic system that adapts, transforms, and grows with time and the needs of society.
